G2 Throttle FAQ’s

Actually, all tamer throttles have a progressive shape, but some models have this shape machined into the throttle tube pulley as a channel.  If you look at these throttle tubes with channels from the end they appear round.  However, if you have a second look from the side while slowly rotating, you will see the depth of this channel change.  For certain models, we feel this is a better way to offer exactly the same progressive performance while providing a channel to help ensure the throttle cable stays in the intended position.

Sorry, what we offer is the largest possible cams that will work with the stock throttle housing and cables.  We feel the best throttle housings and cables in most cases are stock, so we strive to make throttle cams to work with them!  For street bikes, changing throttle cables can be a pain!  However, if you must go quicker for closed course competition and are willing to replace your entire throttle system (tube/housing and cables), our sister company, Domino Racing, may have just the options you seek!

These “plastic washers” are actually Delrin Friction Plates.  In most cases, there is excess throttle play from left-to-right on most throttle tubes.  By sliding the Delrin Friction Plate onto your handlebar BEFORE the throttle tube/grip, and installing INSIDE the throttle housing, you can reduce this play.  These friction plates are optional, so if your throttle has little/no play from left-to-right, it should not be installed.  If you feel your throttle is too tight or does not snap back freely, disassemble the throttle and remove the Delrin Friction Plate.

NEVER LUBRICATE YOUR G2 THROTTLE TUBE!  The G2 Throttle tube has self-lubricating Delrin inserts pressed into each end, or in the case of the Mertic Tamer –  the entire throttle tube is machined from Delrin material.  Delrin is very slippery in its dry form.  Adding any lubricant will only attract dirt/debris that can prematurely wear the Delrin material.  For best results, simply disassemble and clean your throttle tube and housing when needed..

MOST IMPORTANTLY – DO NOT OPERATE YOUR MOTORCYCLE IF THE HAND THROTTLE/GRIP DOES NOT SNAP BACK TO THROTTLE OFF POSITION, OR IF YOU FEEL ANY RESISTANCE.

Inspection steps:

  1. Do a quick visual inspection to make sure the inner grip flange is not touching the throttle housing, and the outer grip end is not touching your bar ends or handguards, if applicable.
  2. DIRT BIKE – skip to #3.  Double check that the locator pin/tab on the throttle housing is fully positioned in it’s hole in the handlebar.  If you are using aftermarket handlebars, ensure the handlebar hole is large enough for the pin/tab.  If you removed the pin/tab, make sure it is FULLY REMOVED so that it is not causing the housing to seat at an angle not perpendicular to the handlebar.  For many applications, our G2 throttle pulley, or cam, is actually wider than stock for safety reasons, so make double sure the housing is seating correctly.
  3. Make sure throttle tube/grip freeplay is adjusted to 3-5mm.  If there is no freeplay, the throttle tube and throttle body/carburetor pulleys will bind against each other (like front and rear sprockets when the chain is too tight).
  4. Disassemble throttle housing, throttle tube/grip & cables.  Reassemble throttle housing and throttle tube/grip WITHOUT cables.  Take care again that housing locator pin/tab (#2) is fitted correctly.  If throttle turns freely, please check again cable freeplay and proper seat of throttle housing.  If throttle rubs, please contact G2 at 815-778-0468 or email info@g2ergo.com.  DO NOT START OR OPERATE YOUR MOTORCYCLE UNLESS THROTTLE ROTATES FREELY AND SNAPS TO OFF POSITION WHEN YOU REMOVE YOUR HAND.

The technical term for the cam fit tolerance is an “interference fit”.  It can be a bit tight, but it’s not a press fit.  Usually, the cams can be easily removed by hand.  If you get a stubborn one, here’s our method.  Use a razor-blade knife (box cutter) and press the blade into the crack between cam and tube (take care NOT to cut your self!).  Work your way around doing this in at least 3 spots per rotation until enough space opens up to switch to a small, flat blade screwdriver to carefully continue the process.  Go easy with the screwdriver or you may damage the cam or throttle tube flange.

If your motorcycle is less than 20 years old and a relatively popular brand, we probably already know what will fit.  Maybe we simply screwed up the website listing?  PLEASE feel free to email us at dirt.tech@g2ergo.com or street.tech@g2ergo.com, or call us at 815-778-0468.  Also, if you do have an older model motorcycle or some crazy CB500-engine-wedged-in-a-1978-RM250-frame for hillclimbing, ice racing or just to upset your neighbors, please shoot us an email!  With literally thousands of tube and cam combos, we may very well have just the throttle you need.   If not, our sister company www.dominoracing.com most certainly has a throttle controller (housing & tube) that can be adapted!

Grips FAQ’s

Yes, you will need a grip to work with our throttle.  Being in the throttle business, we have changed more grips that most factory mechanics!  We’ve seen, used and/or installed virtually all brands and styles of standard “rubber” grips for ourselves, customers and sponsored racers.  We can say with certainty that Domino Racing is the best grip ever made for BOTH street and off-road!  Domino is an Italian, family-owned business that takes great pride in using high quality materials and unique textures providing grip, comfort and durability.  We respect their brand so much we have partnered up to become their North American importer!  Another great brand is Renthal.  Renthal is a UK company that offers nothing but the highest quality grips, handlebars and sprockets.  We suggest sticking with one of these brands for the best, and safest, riding experience.

Sorry, our throttle tubes are not compatible with lock-on grips.  While lock-on grips are convenient, their left side grips do not perform very well.  The left side lock-on grip is adhered to a plastic tube, which allows the grip/tube to be clamped to the handlebar.  This grip is much thinner than a conventional left side grip to compensate for the thickness of the plastic tube.  This thinner grip transmits far more vibration and jarring forces to your hand & wrist.  The throttle side works OK with a thinner grip adhered to a throttle tube, as it is not fixed, and rotates.  This right-side movement prevents much of the vibration and forces from reaching your right hand & wrist.  We sponsor many racers who use brands that offer lock-on grips.  None of these racers that we have encountered will compete with a left side lock-on grip.  This is not to single out any particular brand, it is merely a common performance weakness of ALL lock-on grip designs that we have tested!

Probably the most asked grip question!  If you ask 10 seasoned mechanics, you will likely get 10 different answers!   After 20 years of throttle development and thousands of grip installs, we discovered Loctite Extreme Glue (formerly called GO2 Adhesive Gel) to be the best solution.  The GO2 is a high-strength, cryogenic adhesive, like Super Glue, but for grips it is superior in two ways:  first, it has a thicker consistence like honey.  This makes it very easy to slide on each grip.  Second, it has a longer cure time, making installation far more forgivable.  You have plenty of time to slide on the grip, then rotate it to the position you want.

  • Tip #1   Put some tape over the throttle tube end before installation to prevent glue from getting inside the tube.  You DO NOT want glue to get inside the tube and harden!!!
  • Tip #2   Let the grips cure overnight for best results.  Once installed, DO NOT let anyone touch or rotate your grips.  If the grips are stressed before the adhesive is fully cured, the bond will be broken!
  • Tip #3   DIRT BIKE GUYS – wire your grips!  When you snip the excess wire and bend that little remaining nob into grip, always push the nub into the grip so it points to the outer end of the grip.  Trust us on this!

Of course!  Using compressed air or WD-40 & small, flat blade scrwedriver method (see video in installation section) may remove your grip.  Before reinstallation, just make sure to clean the inside of the grip to ensure proper grip/tube adhesion.

Absolutely not!  The cam slides on and off from the inward end of the throttle tube.  Simply disassemble the throttle housing, disconnect the cable/s and slide the tube off the handlebar for quick, easy cam changes!

We have not discovered a heated grip brand that does not work with G2 Throttle Tubes.  Regarding your stock heated grips, if you can remove the right-side grip from the stock throttle tube, you will be able to glue it onto our throttle tube.

Shipping FAQ’s

Chances are, your package is moving along just as quickly as possible between the coordination of USPS and Canadian Post.  We choose this method most often, as the rate is most reasonable, and with USPS there seem to be far fewer delays in Canadian Customs than other options.  The weakness of USPS / Canadian Post is the communication between the two.  That scan you see in Carol Stream, IL is the final US scan before your order leaves US soil.  Unfortunately, as it journeys through Canada, no scans are shared with USPS until the product is delivered.  The good news is that in over 15 years of shipping, we have never lost a package with Canadian Post!  Typical delivery is 5-10 business days!  We have heard this depends mainly on the backlog at Canadian Customs.

As soon as we print a shipping label (typically labels are processed in the morning), you should receive an email with tracking info sent to the email address you provided.  Keep in mind that this email may have been redirected to your JUNK file.  If not, please email us at shipping@g2ergo.com.

For most orders, we do our very best to ship no later than the next business day that each order is placed.  Our rural mail carrier picks up between 9am-11am Monday through Friday, so it’s impossible to offer USPS same day shipping for all orders.  Please keep in mind, G2 is not a big box mail order company with a UPS semi pick-up at 7pm each night.  We’re just three guys and a hound dog trying to develop, produce and ship the best freakin’ motorcycle throttles in the world!

Most orders are shipped in relatively small, yellow padded envelopes that may be easy to misplace.  If you don’t live alone, make sure someone didn’t place it in a stack of mail somewhere or behind the hat rack.  Sometimes the padded envelopes are too large for certain mailboxes, so the postal carrier puts in on a porch, behind a bush, etc.  Please have a look where packages are normally left, and keep in mind the wind may have relocated it!  Maybe it was mistakenly delivered to your neighbor’s door?  It never hurts to ask!  Still no luck?  Try calling your local post office and ask them to investigate.  We have tried this from our end with little luck – it’s just too easy for a postal worker in your area to blow us off.  When YOU call YOUR local post office, things have a far higher chance of being taken seriously!  If these tips don’t solve the mystery, shoot us an email at shipping@g2ergo.com and we’ll take over!

No offense to our UK mates, but your VAT system  is not ideal!  Actually, the truth is we can’t seem to work with the new UK VAT.  Our new channels are actually better anyway, as we have 3 great UK dealers stocking our products!  For all street throttles, try Speedycom Performance.  For Street Competition Quick Turns, try Speedycom Performance.  For Street Competition Quick Turns, try Speedycom Performance.  For dirt throttles, please try Advantage Offroad or Eurotech UK!
